Focus on : Comparison of the Development of the Attican Democracy and Sparta

1 unit: Greek Realm of the Gods, role of the oracle etc in comparison to monotheistic religions.

Focus on changing political structures, rights of participation.

3 units as group work on: origin, development and role of Christianity; foundations of Judaism, Christianity and Islam (writings, celebrations, laws etc)

  • 1. The City: roles of artisans and merchants, position and role of the Jews.
  • 2. Relations between the State and the Church, monasteries as political and religious ways of life
  • 3. Development of Government and Organization of Power in the M.A.: The realm of the Franks, feudal service etc,

1. The development of modern structures in society and state from the early modern age to the 19th century

Obligatory topic 1 : The Individual and the Society

  • Humanism and Renaissance
  • Reformation and Counter-Reformation
  • Basis of Democratic Thought:
  • Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau
  • Age of Enlightenment
  • Idea of the National State

(teacher chooses 1 of the 5 main topics) here: reformation and counter-reformation, role of M.Luther, Calvin and Zwingli, peasant wars, Union and Liga, 30-years-war, visit of DHM and analysis of film on M.Luther.

Obligatory topic 2: Development of the modern State

  • Absolutism in Prussia, Prussian Reforms, 1948 Revolution

here:  particular focus on the emergence of enlightened thinking in contrast to practical politics.

(alternatives would be: Absolutism in France,Origin and Development of the USA, Early Parliamentary structures in Great Britain.
