                       THOUGHT,INFORMATION AND EXPRESSION

          AIMS:TO

OBJECTIVES:By the end of a lesson the students should be able to:

o   use non-verbal stimuli(photos,pictures,etc.)to make assumptions and to talk about people and their lives

o   talk about EU and defenders of Human Pights-locate specific details-dates,names,political terms,etc.

o   contribute ideas,ask questions

MATERIALS,EQUIPMENT:map of the world,notebooks,handouts and pictures about Nelson Mandella,Andrei Sakharov,Hu Jia

PREPARATION before the lesson-CHARTER of RIGHTS-Title 2 FREEDOMS:art.10,art.11

INTERACTION FORMAT:individual work,group work,teacher-whole class

 

                        ACTIVITIES:

Warm up-Group work

 

       Using pictures of Andrei Sakharov,Nelson Mandella and Hu Jia ask students if they know  who are they.Ask is there anything in common between them.Using a map of the world-point their countries.

 

Preparation for speaking and reading-Teacher-whole class

 

             The teacher shows the Charter of Rights and introduces the topic:the defenders of human rights .Ask if the students know that the European Parliament awarded the Sakharov Prize for people who have struggled for human rights of thought and information.

 

Reading-Individual work

               In order to know who is Andrei Sakharov students read handouts and share

their ideas about him.

 

Speaking-Discussion

            The Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought was set in 1988 to honour individuals or organizations for their efforts in behalf of Human rights or fundamental freedom.A formal setting is in Strasburg on or around 10 December,the day on which the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948.

 

Reading-Group work

         The students read the LIST of Sakharov Prize winners and find out that the first winner is Nelson Mandella in 1988 and the last one is Hu Jia-a Chinese dissident in 2008.The first group of students read handouts about N.Mandella,the second one read the handouts about Hu Jia.(Then and now Hu Jia is serving asentence in Chinese prison for his efforts in the field of AIDS and the environment.He has own online blog about things that do not speak Chinese media.)

 

Discussion

        The students share their opinions about N.Mandella and Hu Jia.Are their efforts important in the modern world?Why? Why not? Is the Sakharov Prize necessary ?

 What conclusions are the students going to make at the end of a lesson?

 

Follow-up    (Possible conclusions)

      The basic values in our modern world are religious freedom,tolerance,freedom of thought,expression and information.The people,who struggle for these values like A.Sakharov,N.Mandella and Hu Jia,are often limited to only one part of the world,but they touch all of us.

       Think of someone from your country who is a defender for freedom of thought and information and write about that person’s life.
